Becoming A Christian
Are you interested in becoming a Christian?  Are you wondering what it means to be a Christian?
Great!  Let's get started by looking at some verses in the Bible that give us some insights and directions.  Look up each of the highlighted scriptures and follow along.
In Matthew 16 Jesus asks his disciple who people think he is.  This draws a variety of answers.  But when he asks who the disciples think he is, Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah), the Son of God.  Later in that same chapter, Jesus says that anyone who wishes to be his discple must deny his own selfish desires, be willing to suffer earthly loss for the sake of heavenly gain, and follow the lifestyle of Jesus.  In short, a Christian is one who believes that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and follows Jesus' way of life rather than his own.  How do we get to that point?

Romans 3:23 says that everyone has sinned (done things that offend God) and fallen short of the perfection of God.  So step one is to admit that we are sinners and need God's help.

John 3:16 tells us that God loves us so much that he sent Jesus (his one and only Son) to provide a way for us to have a new and eternal life.  To avoid the death penalty of our sinful ways and to receive the reward of eternal life, we must put our trust in Jesus, who paid the death penalty by dying on the cross and demonstrated eternal life by rising from the grave.  That's the "gift" that Romans 6:23 talks about, which we'll get to in just a moment.  So step two is to put our trust in Jesus instead of ourselves.

Romans 6:23 reminds us that the result of our sinful ways is death (the destruction of our lives), but that the free remedy that gives us eternal life is found in Jesus, the Son of God.  Acts 3:19 puts it this way: "Repent (this means to turn around), then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord".  So step three is to turn from our sinful ways and turn toward the beneficial ways of Jesus.  This wipes our slate clean and gives us a brand new start in life.

In 2nd Corinthians 5:17 the apostle Paul says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"

Would you like to begin a new life as a Christian?  Then let's talk to God and get started following Jesus to eternal life.

Say this prayer with me ...

God, I admit that I have sin in my life and I need your help to fix all that's wrong in my life.

I believe that Jesus is your Son, that he died in my place on the cross and that he rose from the dead to lead us to eternal life.  So, I put my life in his hands instead of my own.

I'm sorry for the sinful things I've done and I'm ready to start my life over, following your ways.  Please wipe away my sins and make me a new person.  Help me to live each moment of my life in a new way.

Congratulations!  You're now on a new path of life ... You're now a Christian!
